Background and clinical significance

Renin is a proteolytic enzyme synthesized by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidney. Renin plays an integral role in the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System. This system regulates blood pressure through blood volume, sodium and water homeostasis control and vasoconstriction.
