Biography

Dr. Fernanda Takamatsu is a Staff Surgeon in the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). She completed her medical degree, general surgery residency and paediatric surgery residency at the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil. She also completed a fellowship in liver and pancreas transplantation and earned a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Surgical Science. At SickKids, Dr. Takamatsu completed advanced clinical fellowships in intestinal rehabilitation with the Group for Improvement of Intestinal Function and Treatment (GIFT), general and thoracic surgery, and neonatal intensive care. Her clinical interests include neonatal surgery, intestinal failure and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.

Research

Dr. Takamatsu's research focuses on improving outcomes and quality of life for children with intestinal failure. She has studied surgical approaches for children with intestinal failure that is not caused by short bowel syndrome, with a focus on preserving and optimizing bowel function. She is also interested in the connection between the gut and the brain in newborns who require surgery. Her research aims to better understand how surgery may affect this gut-brain relationship and how those changes may influence neurodevelopment. This work may help support the development of targeted interventions to improve long-term outcomes for children.
