Biography
Dr. Eytan Wine completed his medical and paediatric training in Israel, followed by a Paediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He also earned a PhD in Cellular Microbiology from the University of Toronto. Dr. Wine then moved to the University of AB in Edmonton in 2009, where he developed his clinical and research career as Clinician Scientist, and Paediatric Gastroenterologist, becoming Full Professor of Paediatrics and Physiology in 2021. He returned to SickKids in May 2025.
Dr. Wine is actively involved in national and international collaborations, serving on the Executive of the ESPGHAN Porto IBD Group (2019-2025) and co-chairing the Canadian Children IBD Network (CIDsCaNN). Research
Dr. Wine’s clinical expertise lies in the management of children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis, with a particular focus on dietary therapies such as the Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED). His research, conducted through the Wine Lab at the SickKids Research Institute and the University of Alberta, explores the roles of intestinal bacteria, nutrition, epithelial barrier function, and inflammation in the pathogenesis of IBD. His work bridges basic science and clinical application, enabling impactful translational research.
In addition to his research and clinical work, Dr. Wine is dedicated to education and mentorship, supervising postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and clinical trainees.
