Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) is a provincial access and privacy legislation that applies to hospitals effective January 1, 2012. FIPPA establishes a general right of access to records in the custody or control of hospitals from January 1, 2007 onward for the purposes of accountability and transparency. FIPPA recognizes that information should be available to the public but balances it against the protection of personal and confidential information.

Beginning January 1, 2012 you may make a request to access records in the custody and control of SickKids; this is referred to as an FOI request. Under FIPPA, a record is defined broadly and can include but is not limited to the following:

  • paper and electronic documents
  • microfiche
  • videos
  • photographs
  • disks
  • drawings

The FOI Office at SickKids is responsible for processing all FOI requests.  See more information about making an FOI request

Your privacy is of paramount importance at SickKids. To find out more about how we collect, use, disclose and dispose of your personal information and personal health information please contact the SickKids Privacy Office.
