What to Expect During Your Visit

Your appointment can take up to two hours to complete.

Your appointment in the Vertigo Clinic will be tailored to your child’s history - what doctors they have already seen, what tests they have already had done - as well as their age and degree of cooperation.

Your appointment will include the following:

  • Thorough review of the history of your child’s symptoms as well as the questionnaire and log that we had you fill out ahead of time
  • Physical examination which will include:
    • General exam of the ear, nose and throat
    • Specific exam of the balance part of the inner ear
      • This includes wearing a pair of video goggles (you can prepare your child by letting them know this will be like wearing a pair of ski/swim goggles)
      • Spinning around on a chair
      • Reading an eye chart
    • A standardized test of balance
      • Standing on one foot, eyes open, eyes closed, on and off a balance beam etc. which we score to see how your child’s balance rates compared to their peers
      • General neurologic exam
    • Summary of what we found and of what tests have been completed and what we think the diagnosis may be along with treatment options if they exist.
    • Review what additional tests your child may need or what other specialist your child may need to see

Your appointment may also include:

  • Hearing test (audiogram) – Even if your child has had this test we will often repeat it as some time has passed and hearing difficulties in children with dizziness may change with time or come and go. We also will do some special testing which is often not done with a regular hearing test.
  • Ear cleaning – If your child’s ears are blocked by wax we may remove this at the time of the appointment.

Given the many parts to the appointment we book one hour per patient to ensure that we have the time to complete the above and answer any questions.
