Dr. Lennox H. Huang appointed Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Medical and Academic Affairs

Dr. Lennox H. Huang has been appointed to the position of Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Medical and Academic Affairs effective May 11, 2015.

Following an extensive internal and external search process, Dr. Lennox H. Huang has been appointed to the position of Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Medical and Academic Affairs at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) effective May 11, 2015.

Dr. Huang joins SickKids from McMaster University where he is currently an Associate Professor, Chair of the Department of Paediatrics and Chief of Paediatrics for McMaster Children’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. He has held numerous leadership roles at the regional, provincial and national level including President of the Regional Medical Associates of Hamilton, and Vice President of the Paediatric Chairs of Canada.

Under Dr. Huang's leadership, McMaster’s Department of Paediatrics has seen a 60 per cent increase in its faculty numbers, a 250 per cent increase in its postgraduate fellowship trainee numbers, and greatly expanded clinical and academic productivity. Most recently he has led his department to develop more formal linkages with regional community hospitals to improve clinical and academic integration.

Dr. Huang’s background includes a BA in Psychology from Boston University, MD from the University of Toronto followed by Paediatric Residency and Critical Care Fellowship at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. 

He has participated in many Advisory Committees and Expert Panels over the years with provincial roles covering pandemic planning, palliative care, genetics and chronic complex patients. At the national level, he has led initiatives for patient safety education and studying physician human resources for Paediatrics.

Dr. Huang is an accomplished academician with work spanning many clinical areas, simulation in health care and quality and patient safety initiatives.  He led the creation of the paediatric high-fidelity simulation program at McMaster Children’s Hospital and has a special interest in applying simulation to analyse clinical processes and environments.

In addition to his administrative and academic roles, Dr. Huang is clinically active as a staff physician in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and trauma team leader in the Paediatric Emergency Department. He will join SickKids as an academic clinician in the Division of Critical Care while continuing his health-care simulation work as it relates to quality and patient safety.
