SickKids appoints Interim President and CEO

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David Naylor, MD, DPhil, to the position of Interim President and CEO at SickKids. Dr. Naylor will assume the interim role on Oct. 1, following the departure of Dr. Michael Apkon, who is leaving SickKids for a CEO role in the United States.

TORONTO – The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David Naylor, MD, DPhil, to the position of Interim President and CEO at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). Dr. Naylor will assume the interim role on October 1, following the departure of Dr. Michael Apkon, who is leaving SickKids for a CEO role in the United States.   

Dr. Naylor is currently a Professor of Medicine and President Emeritus at the University of Toronto. He served as President of the University of Toronto from 2005 to 2013 and is also a past Dean of Medicine & Vice Provost, Relations with Healthcare Institutions.

Dr. Naylor is an esteemed physician-scientist, known for his leadership in academics, health research, governance and public policy.  Among his many accomplishments, he founded and led a new research program in clinical epidemiology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and was also the inaugural Chief Executive of the renowned Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. Dr. Naylor is a laureate of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

“Dr. Naylor is an extremely accomplished leader, who comes with a wealth of knowledge in health care, health research, academia, administration and policy,” said the Honourable Sabi Marwah, Chair, SickKids Board of Trustees. “We are fortunate to have him lead SickKids as we conduct our search for our next leader.”

“I am delighted to be supporting SickKids during this transition,” said Dr. Naylor. “SickKids is a global icon in paediatric care, teaching, advanced training and research.  It’s a humbling privilege to spend some time working as part of a talented leadership team at such a remarkable institution.”

The Board of Trustees has initiated the international search process for the next President and CEO. The recruitment firm will be selected later this month and the Board is aiming to have the role filled in early 2019.
