Joanne Fernandes is an energetic and results-driven leader on the Diagnostic Imaging team at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). She has been in healthcare since 2001, primarily in the hospital sector. Many of these years have been spent in hospital diagnostics, both diagnostic imaging (DI) and laboratory services in a community hospital setting.
Joanne received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (Honours, Co-op) from the University of Waterloo and Masters of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business at York University. She is most passionate about improving patient safety and quality. During her time as Manager of Business Intelligence and Quality Improvement at Rouge Valley Health System, she learned the business of diagnostics. She also completed her Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification and has facilitated many quality initiatives in both diagnostic imaging and laboratory departments. Upon promotion to Director of Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory Services at Rouge Valley, Joanne collaborated with a variety of partners across the healthcare continuum on many strategic projects to implement creative solutions to continually improve patient experience and flow between clinical areas. Joanne went on to accept the position of Manager of Quality Improvement, Program Delivery, at Health Quality Ontario where she gained a provincial perspective of the quality priorities and variation across the province. These included quality improvement plans, quality standards, integrated care, hallway healthcare, mental health and addictions, and palliative care.
Joanne shares her varied perspectives in business, community and provincial lenses, to continue to build on DI’s strong position as a leader in paediatric imaging while supporting the evolution into the radiology department of the future.
