SickKids continues to rank as one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals for 2022

Summary:

SickKids ranks first for hospital intensity and second for researcher intensity as one of Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals.

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has ranked among Canada’s top research hospital for 2022. On a list which features Canada’s leading research hospitals, SickKids has achieved the highest rank in hospital intensity and ranks second in researcher intensity among medium-sized hospitals. This marks the twelfth consecutive year SickKids has held a top spot on the Top 40 Research Hospitals list.

“Being named as one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals is an important acknowledgment of the innovative research being led by our scientific community,” says Dr. Stephen Scherer, Chief of Research at SickKids. “This is a reflection of our commitment to advancing all aspects of child health research, not just at our hospital and research institute, but as leaders across Canada and globally.”

SickKids has once again ranked first in hospital intensity (research spending as a percentage of total hospital spending) among medium-sized hospitals, with research accounting for 22.9 per cent of hospital spending in 2022. In addition to this important measure, SickKids also achieved second place in researcher intensity (research spending per researcher).

“As a research hospital, we pride ourselves on the connection between researchers and clinicians across our enterprise – wherein clinical findings drive research questions which in turn spur new avenues for discovery and clinical innovation. Investing in our research teams, from scientists to post-doctoral fellows, is essential to the continued impact of SickKids research,” says Scherer.

SickKids Research Institute is home to over 2,000 researchers, staff and trainees who are contributing to ground-breaking research across seven different programs, including Cell Biology, Child Health Evaluative Sciences, Developmental & Stem Cell Biology, Genetics & Genome Biology, Molecular Medicine, Neurosciences & Mental Health and Translational Medicine.
